Dr. Smitherman became a physician because it provided him an opportunity to serve people in a profound and personal way. He chose orthopedics because it offers interaction with people to determine their specific goals for restoring function and activity. He says there are no greater joys than telling a child that his or her broken arm has healed, getting an athlete back to the playing field, or helping adults remain active and independent.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Mississippi State University, Dr. Smitherman entered the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2005. He continued his medical training with an orthopedic residency at the Greenville Hospital System/University of South Carolina School of Medicine. During this time, he studied sports medicine diagnostic and surgical techniques at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. His fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery was completed at the University of Florida.
Dr. Smitherman's medical interests include sports medicine, rotator cuff injuries, tendinitis and arthritis. He is Board Certification Eligible by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Dr. Smitherman enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He also enjoys travel and endurance sports like swimming, cycling and running.
