Meet Dr. Capocelli

Dr. Capocelli was exposed at a very early age to the field of neuroscience by an uncle who was a professor of neurophysiology and an aunt who was a professor of cell biology. He went on to complete undergraduate research and earn a degree in neurobiology and furthered his research and clinical experience in medical school. Witnessing the devastating effects of neurologic disease and the limited options for direct interventions at the time led him to pursue a career in neuroscience and focus on the study and implementation of surgical treatments. He finds pleasure in a simple “thank you” from a patient following a surgical procedure and continues research in his field in an effort to further improve the quality of life for his patients.

Born in Portchester, N.Y., Dr. Capocelli spent most of his childhood years growing up in the tri-state area of New York and New Jersey. He attended the University of Rochester, earning a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology and furthered his education at State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences where he received his Doctor of Medicine, cum laude. He completed an internship in general surgery at the University of Utah and began a clinical and research fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Schneider Children’s Hospital. He continued his medical training at State University of New York, Downstate Brooklyn Health Science Center, King’s County Hospital Center, where he completed another clinical and research fellowship and a residency in neurological surgery where he later served as chief resident.

Dr. Capocelli has a special interest in the treatment of Chiari malformation, the associated skull base and related spinal disorders. He also has strong experience and desire for continued research in tertiary spinal disorders. Dr. Capocelli has served as the regional liaison for the Arkansas Neurosurgical Society. He has also served as a research, development and educational faculty member for several national and international corporations.

With five children and two grandchildren, Dr. Capocelli and his wife Cristy have plenty to keep them busy. They are active members of Grace Community Methodist Church. A talented soccer player in his younger years, Dr. Capocelli has also served as a youth soccer coach. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting and fishing. As an avid guitarist and jazz enthusiast, he has a passion for music evident in his time as a DJ for the NPR affiliate WBFO in Buffalo, NY. His talent as a DJ earned mention in Downbeat magazine in the late 80s for cohosting one of the cutting-edge modern “jazz fusion” programs.
