Whether or not you are running for fun or competition, helping Arkansans stay safe is one of our year-round goals. This month we’ve put together tips for hurdling wintertime running hazards.
Winter running safety
The winter months present challenges from less daylight hours to slippery terrain. The most important running safety rule anytime of the year is visibility. Make sure that you can be seen and that you can see your running path.
With more hours of darkness, it’s harder for runners to find a time to run during the daylight. Stay visible by wearing reflective materials, light colors, or use a blinking light to stand out along the roads.
Here are additional ways to stay safe when running in the cold:
- Avoid headwind chills on windy days by running out against the wind and back with the wind.
- Keep extremities warm: hats and mittens preserve heat.
- Avoid cotton clothing that holds moisture and does not insulate well when damp.
- Dress in layers to maintain comfort during the beginning and end of runs.
- Wear windproof and breathable shells to regulate heat loss.
- Cold stiffens shoes and the soles will be less forgiving than in warmer months.
- Avoid mesh shoes in the winter.
Running Resources
In case you missed it, we created a guide to getting marathon ready in 6-months earlier this year. Our guide is breakdown of weekly milestones to hit while training for a marathon. If you are new to running or getting back in your groove, our guide is full of helpful tips.
Stay safe and happy running. And don’t forget to always warm-up before a run.
